Edakkal Cave is
located on Ambukuthi Hill in Nenmeni Village, Bathery. Edakkal Caves are two
natural caves in a remote location about 10 km from Bathery and 25 km from
Kalpetta in Wayanad district. Many of the paintings inside this cave are said
to be of Neolithic age.Human figures, geometric figures, animal figures and
wheels carved into stone by ancient societies can still be found on these cave
walls. Wayanad district is located very high above sea level and Edakkal cave
is located on Ambukuthi mountain which is the highest mountain in Wayanad.
Edakkal Cave was discovered by Britisher Fred Fawcett. It is about 1 km walk
from the parking lot to the ticket counter. Tickets cost Rs 30 for adults and
Rs 20 for children. Entry is allowed from 8 am to 4 pm. Monday is holiday
Edakkal Cave is situated at a height of 4000 feet above the sea level. From the parking lot, one can reach the ticket counter of Edakkal Cave by walking along the road for about 1 km. After taking the ticket, there are steep steps. Edakkal cave is formed by another big rock falling between two big rocks. Ancient paintings and writings can be seen inside the cave. There is evidence of over 6000 years of habitation here. Since there was no script at that time, the pictures and writings drawn by them can be seen here
